Why the computer does not see the hard drive: the causes and solution
Each computer uses a hard disk that stores software and other files necessary for operation. Note that this component is very sensitive, and problems arise with it often. This is due to the presence of moving elements at high speed inside the disk. One of the possible problems is the situation when the computer does not see the hard disk. Why is this happening and how to solve it? About this and talk.
Problem in connection or power interface
First you need to check whether the disk is working. To do this, it must be connected to another computer. It is easy to do: just remove 4 (or even 2) screws, pull out the power cable and SATA cable and connect to another computer. If he sees the disk, it will clearly indicate a problem with the computer from which the drive was removed.
Why the computer does not see the hard drive, if another system could notice it? There can be several reasons:
- Non-working cable that goes from the power supply and enters the hard drive. You can try to use a different cable, which is intended for DVD-drive. And although most often it is the same cable, the power connectors are suitable.
- Non-working SATA cable or socket on the motherboard. It is necessary to try to replace both the cable and the socket where the drive was connected. Alternatively, the SATA cable can be taken from another computer.
- Not enough power. If the power supply has a low power, then the hard disk may corny not enough power. As a result, it simply will not be able to turn on, and it is quite clear that the system will not be able to see it. In this case, on the computer, it is appropriate to replace the power supply with a more powerful one. Replacing the drive will not solve the issue, since all models have approximately the same power consumption.
There is a small probability that after carrying out these manipulations the hard disk will work. These are the most basic operations that a user can quickly take to solve this problem. If nothing has helped and it is still unknown why the computer does not see the hard disk, then you need to look for the cause deeper.
BIOS may well be the reason why the computer does not see the hard drive. Therefore, its settings must either be changed or reset. The last option is the easiest. To do this, we restart the computer, enter the BIOS (usually you need to press F2 or Del when rebooting) and look for the menu item "Load Optimized Defaults". It can also be the string "Load Optimal Defaults". We select this item, click Enter, the system asks for confirmation, we agree. Now press F10 (save and exit), confirm the action, the computer restarts again. Then the system will be able to see the hard drive, after which it will boot.
No interface support
If the computer does not see the hard disk, the cause may be the SATA interface, which the old operating systems cannot work with. However, it is believed that this problem is solved by downloading drivers for SATA or installing the Windows distribution in which the necessary drivers are preinstalled. However, the easiest option is to install a more recent operating system (Windows 7, for example), where the necessary drivers are present by default.
By the way, the absence of drivers in the system is possible in the case of using pirated copies of software in the form of various assemblies from unknown users.
If several hard drives from different manufacturers are connected to the computer on different SATA interfaces at once, then there may be a conflict of devices. It’s easy enough to check that this is true. To do this, you must turn off each drive in turn and see how the system reacts to it. It may turn out that after disconnecting the first disk, the operating system will freely detect the second drive, and when the second one is disconnected, it will see the first one without any problems. In this case, the reason why the computer does not see the new hard disk will be obvious - a conflict of devices. If the disk is new, then it is desirable to replace it with another one - from the same manufacturer as the main one.
Operating system problems
In some cases, it is not clear why the computer does not see the hard disk, while Windows boots up, and information about it is displayed in the BIOS. In this case, there is a problem with the operating system. You can try to solve this problem by means of Windows itself.
To do this, open the "Control Panel" and go to the "Administration" section. There is an item "Computer Management". Select it and see in the tree on the left "Disk Management". Click on it with the right button, the context menu is called, click on "Change drive letter or path." A new window opens in which we can change the drive letter. Specify a new letter, click "OK", restart the computer.
In some cases it helps to solve the problem, but not always. This solution works when there is already another device in the system (for example, a DVD-drive) with the letter D assigned to indicate the main disk partition by default.
When the disk is not turned on by the system
When you connect an additional hard drive, the system may crash and not prepare it. However, this can be done manually. To do this, go to the same section "Disk Management". It will display all drives connected to the computer - working or not. If the line “No data” is next to the additional disk, it means that it is not initialized.Click on it with the right mouse button and select the item "Initialize".
Also opposite the disc may be written "Not distributed." Click on it with the right button, select the option "Create a simple volume" and follow the instructions of the system.
If the system specifies the disk RAW, it means that the drive must be formatted in the file system NTFS or FAT32. Click on it with the right mouse button and select the option "Format". At the same time all information from the drive will be deleted.
If the computer does not see the external hard drive
Note that the external drive is a more modern analogue flash drive. It connects via USB interface. Therefore, if the computer does not see the external hard drive, then first of all you need to try to connect it to another USB port.
If this does not help, then you need to change the drive letter. The above describes how to do this. Also worth considering that the new disk may not be formatted. This will have to be done independently. You need to format the system FAT32 or NTFS in the same section "Disk Management". Be careful, as when formatting all data from the disk is deleted forever.
The lack of drivers is another reason why the computer does not see the hard disk. What to do in this case? Yes, you just need to install the driver. Perhaps, a disk with utilities came bundled with an external hard drive - they need to be installed. If there is no disk, then the necessary "firewood" can be found on the Web, download and install. And although in 90% of cases, Windows automatically connects external hard drives (drivers are already in the system), sometimes it happens that applications need to be downloaded independently.
These are the main reasons why the computer does not see the hard disk. What do you do in these cases, you now know, but if nothing happens and the system still cannot recognize the presence of the drive, then you cannot exclude a hardware failure of the device. It can be determined quite accurately by connecting the drive to another computer. And even if the other system could not recognize it, then it is clearly broken. However, if it is new, then it will be replaced under warranty. As for the old disks, which are more than 5 years old, you should not worry about them, as they have not the longest period. Drives are extremely sensitive devices, inside of them are moving parts. And if we are talking about SSD-drives, then these do have a limited lifespan, since the memory cells during recording and erasing information disappear.
In general, now you understand why the computer does not see the hard disk and how to fix a similar problem. Note that this is a common phenomenon, which in most cases is solved programmatically.
