After all, sometimes it is so difficult to choose potatoes that meet all the requirements in terms of unpretentious care and excellent taste of tubers.
Potato Breeze: variety description
This variety was bred by Belarusian breeders in 2005. Specialists of the National Science Center of the Academy of Sciences (Scientific Center for Academic Sciences) in the direction of potato growing patented Breeze potatoes, a year later, this variety was entered into the register of Belarus. And since 2009, the potato replenished the Russian register of varieties.
Potato bushes Breeze medium height, upright. The leaves are rather large, of intermediate type, juicy green. Reddish-purple flowers form a medium-sized corolla.
The tubers are oval-shaped, with a rather smooth skin. Eyes shallow, in small quantities. Bright yellow pulp, not losing its color during heat treatment.
Potato Breeze is rightly considered one of the most high-yielding. About five hundred centners of potatoes can be harvested from one hectare. And this is with an average weight of one potato in a hundred to one hundred and twenty grams. If we compare this figure, for example, with the variety of Sante, then it is thirty centners more. The term of full maturation ranges from 50 to 70 days from the moment of planting, which allows calling this variety medium-early.
Due to the long dormant period of root crops, it is possible to preserve up to 98 percent of the harvested crop. And this despite the fact that the presentation has more than 85 percent of all potatoes. Pretty good performance, isn't it?
The advantages and disadvantages of the variety
Potato Breeze is famous for its taste and early ripening of the crop. In general, there is a whole list of advantages of this variety over others:
- consistently high yield;
- easy process of dry cleaning, sorting and packing of tubers;
- no leaf curl;
- resistance to mosaic viruses (both wrinkled and banded) and cancer;
- excellent storage for a long time;
- beautiful appearance, resistant to mechanical damage.
The only disadvantage of this variety is its susceptibility to diseases such as scab, nematode and late blight.
The main condition for planting potatoes Breeze is a moist and well-heated soil. Its simplicity allows cultivation in virtually any climatic conditions. Before planting potatoes in open ground, make it a thorough preparation. It's pretty simple to do this:
- For two weeks, the tubers prepared for planting are kept for germination in the light, at a temperature not lower than +13 degrees.
- For a small hardening a couple of days before planting, the tubers are covered with a bag.
- To check the temperature of the soil, use a simple thermometer by placing it at a depth of ten centimeters. The temperature of the soil should not be below 8 degrees.
- Be sure to make potash and superphosphate fertilizers in the soil, and then re-dig the plot for planting.
- Digging holes is made according to the following scheme: depth - 10 centimeters, the distance between the holes - 40 centimeters, between rows - 70 centimeters.
- Tubers lay in the holes, germinated eyes up, covered with primer with the addition of ash.
Features of growing potatoes
In order to ensure a fairly early harvest, you should remember about the moisture-loving potato. The drier the soil is, the longer it will take shoots and ripened tubers. In a humid climate, 3-4 irrigations are enough for the entire summer. If in your region there is a dry weather for a long time, then it is necessary to increase watering. In the first period of growing potatoes, there is enough melt water from melted snow. But two weeks after the appearance of the first shoots it is necessary to carry out the first watering. The second watering is carried out during the flowering period. Next, check the condition of the soil and add water if it is too dry.
To get the highest possible yield, you need to take care of the cleanliness of the site. Be sure to remove all weed plants that take nutrients from the soil for potatoes.
Periodic loosening of the near-shallow territory will also be useful. Spuding the bushes after each watering and rain, you not only remove small weeds, but also saturate the soil with oxygen.
If desired, additional fertilizing can be applied to the soil. This is done during hilling. The best fertilizer is rotted manure, bird droppings and other fertilizing of organic origin.
Fight against late blight
Recognizing this disease is quite simple - by brown, brownish and black spots on the sprouts and leaves. Late blight is a fairly common potato disease that carries considerable risks for future harvest. Sometimes the leaves are affected to a lesser extent than already ripe tubers, so it is very important to recognize and get rid of this disease in time.
In order to avoid the spread of blight, you need to carefully pick the potatoes at the planting stage, removing the tubers, even with the slightest damage. Plantings need to be treated with fungicides and even small weeds, which can also be carriers of this epidemic, should be removed.
Do not delay the process of harvesting after drying tops.Since it is an excellent medium for phytophlorosis reproduction.
Fighting potato scab
The scab brings the greatest damage not only to the crop, but also to the soil in which it has ripened. Its distinguishing feature is the destruction of plants only underground. It is very easy to recognize a scab - by brownish stains that look like sores and cracks on the surface of the tubers. Favorable environment for the spread of the disease is a warm and moist soil - just one in which potatoes are grown.
The only pleasant moment in this situation is that the scab is curable. It is enough just to do the treatment in time, and you will probably be able to save most of your harvest. You can fight scab with the help of fungicides, periodically processing plantings. This method will not only relieve potatoes from scab, but also from the mass of other diseases. Also, the site can be protected from this disease by constantly fertilizing it with sulphate-containing feedings. But the method of crop rotation helps best: changing planting places every 3 years. It is especially undesirable to plant potatoes after beets or carrots.
