Pentecost - who are they? Pentecost: Faith
It is not known for certain exactly when the Pentecostals appeared. Who are they? Where does this strange name come from? Many are asked by these questions. Are these ordinary Christians or sectarians whose teachings differ from the usual dogmas of Orthodoxy? Let's try to figure it out.
Who are the Pentecostals?
Christians of the evangelical faith - this is how the Pentecostals were called here in Russia. If we give a precise definition, then we can say that this is a Christian sect that emerged in the USA in the 20th century. In their creed, the Pentecostals emanate from a myth taken from the gospel. It speaks of the "descent of the spirit over the apostles" 50 days after Easter. The Pentecostals talk about him in their sermons. The faith of the people of this religious trend is based on the postulates of the sinfulness of a person and his salvation through the descent of the Holy Spirit to the land. What is important for ministry? Personal faith, devotion to the doctrine and complete renunciation of all earthly blessings.Often, at collective prayers arranged by followers of the flow, people bring themselves to ecstasy. They claim that at this moment the holy spirit descends on them, and at the same time they get the opportunity to "speak in tongues." This “unearthly” speech gives them the opportunity to communicate with God.
How did the current appear?
Pentecostalism itself arose at the beginning of the twentieth century in North America. Its ideological roots lie in the religious and philosophical flow of the XVIII century, called the Royalism. We have a question about where did this strange name Pentecost come from? Who are these people who consider themselves a separate branch of Christian doctrine? As mentioned above, the adherents of this religion attach particular importance to the baptism of the Holy Spirit. During the ceremony, believers experience, in their opinion, the same emotions as the apostles at the descent of the Holy Spirit upon them, which occurred on the 50th day after the Passover of Christ. In the Gospel this moment is called the day of Pentecost. Hence the name of this flow. Pentecostalism spread widely from America to Europe and the Scandinavian countries. In Russia, it appeared on the eve of the First World War in 1914.In the years of the NEP, the flow intensified. The following organizations of this kind have the greatest influence: "Assembly of God" and "Union of God's Meetings".
Pentecost in Russia
As noted above, in our country, the current arose at the beginning of the last century. The first Pentecostal in Russia is the German Wilhelm Ebel. During his visit to Asia in 1902, he stopped in Riga on the way, where he founded his missionary mission office. The first Pentecostal organizations in Russia emerged in 1907. The preacher of the new teaching was the Norwegian pastor T. Barat. A new religious trend quickly found new followers. Baptists, Adventists, and Christians were included in it ... The Pentecostals assured their new members that they had received the grace of the Holy Spirit, who came down to earth in the name of saving people from sins. The first Russian followers of the community - N. P. Smorodin and A. I. Ivanov. It should be noted that in Russia, as in other countries where Pentecostalism is widespread, adherents of the new religion do not differ in the unity of the main tenets of the doctrine. So, for example, Adventists talk about the Holy Saturday, Molokans see the meaning of being in moving to Mount Zion - and so on.There is a conditional division into separate Pentecostal groups: Currants, Leontians, Schmidts, Voronaevts, and others.
In the United States, Pentecostalism is associated with the name of Charles Finney. He believed in him at 21. Then for 50 years he preached a new teaching in the USA, Scotland and England. Finney claimed that the image of Jesus Christ had once appeared before him. The Holy Spirit who descended upon Charles pierced his whole body and soul. After this, Finney believed and began to preach, telling people about this miracle. In this religious movement, another person played an important role. This is Dwight Moody. He lived and preached in the second half of the XIX century. His first evangelistic campaign, he carried out in 38 years. After the sermons of this man, people formed Pentecostal communities, spoke other "angelic" languages, prophesied, healed the seriously ill and performed other "miracles." Speaking about the history of this trend, it should be noted, and Charles Fox Parham. He decided to create a certain Bible school and send out invitations to everyone. Forty students from Kansas responded to his letter. On January 1, 1901, all the followers and their teacher diligently prayed to God at their school. Student Angessa Ozman, wanting to receive spiritual strength, approached Charles and asked the teacher to lay hands on her. At that moment, according to the preacher, a miracle came to the girl: she forgot her native English language and began to speak Chinese. January 1, 1901, many religious believers consider the date of foundation of their community.
In our time, this trend in Russia is in second place among all sectarian associations in terms of the number of believers. Now we have three main similar organizations:
- United Church of Christians of the Evangelical Faith.
- The Russian Church of Christians of the Evangelical Faith (Pentecostal).
- Russian Union of Christians of the Evangelical Faith.
In 1995, a community led by S. V. Ryakhovsky separated from the United Church of Christians of the Evangelical Faith. This man later created the Russian Union of Christians of the Evangelical Faith. There are other organizations of this kind. It is worth noting that many Pentecostal communities are very active in the social sphere. Some of them provide assistance to orphanages, assist medical funds, and organize youth camps.
What do the Pentecostals believe? Who are they? Questions arise in connection with this religious movement. Let's try to figure it out. Adherents of religion believe in the life-giving power of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, which is outwardly manifested in man by the ability to speak in other languages. The Pentecostals believe that when they reach a special state of mind during the evangelization through prayer, the members of the sect have a special gift to speak in different languages. In addition, such a person can open a talent for clairvoyance, wisdom, miracles. An important aspect of sect theology is the so-called “teachings on piety,” which call upon followers to abandon what may interfere with leading a righteous life: from smoking, from alcohol, from gambling, from drugs. Some groups of this trend do not recognize weapons, adhering to the doctrine of "non-resistance to evil."
Despite the closeness and isolation of the community, more and more people in Russia come to sect meetings to listen to Pentecostal sermons. Adherents of religion recognize the authority of the Holy Scriptures. However, they arbitrarily distorted the Great Sacraments of Christianity, turning them into simpler rites. A kind of ritual of the Communion of God is the ceremony of baptism, performed on the first Sunday of each month. Sect members are invited to take a piece of bread from the tray and sip a sip of wine from the bowl. At the end of the prayer, the ritual of washing the feet, which men and women take place separately in different rooms, is performed. Pentecostal people have their own “water baptism”. It is very reminiscent of a Christian ritual. But babies are not baptized, but simply brought to the congregation for blessings. People entering into matrimonial life must necessarily pass the rite of marriage in the sect. Moreover, an alliance with an unbeliever is strictly prohibited. For disobedience, a member of the community is threatened by excommunication. The rite of ordination or anointing of the sick is done by Christians of the gospel faith. Pentecost believes that it will help those in need to quickly recuperate and get rid of the "sickness". A day of rest for believers is Sunday (except for the Sabbath). As a rule, at this time, sect members gather for prayer meetings. All church holidays (the Presentation of the Lord, Christmas, Baptism, the Annunciation, and so on) are celebrated in the old style. Easter falls on Friday Passion Week.
The sect is headed by the so-called fraternal council, which is headed by the presbyter of the church. The communities are united in districts, each of them is headed by a senior presbyter. Under the Soviet regime, this position was called differently - the bishop. The entire territory of the CIS Pentecostal CIS is divided into 32 regions, each of which is headed by a senior presbyter.
The Philistines on the Pentecostal Movement
Recently, this movement has been increasingly criticized. People believe that the Pentecostal church and their doctrines are nothing more than a deception of believers. Many call this education a sect. Apparently, the way it is. There are many eyewitnesses to how meetings of members of this trend pass.People write that from the outside it looks like a riot of a hypnotized crowd that does not notice anything around them and is engaged only in earnest prayer. Believers at the same time kneel and frantically scream, drenched in sweat. Speaking in different languages, or the so-called globals, achieved through fervent prayer, is nothing more than indiscriminate mumbling.Rites are often performed at night in crowded and stuffy rooms. It is not surprising that in such conditions, in strong nervous excitement, people may experience hallucinations, which they take for their “revelation of God.” Among the members of the sect there are many mentally ill. The main task of the preachers of this religion is to lead each new member of the community to such an unbalanced state, when a person cannot adequately assess the situation and react to it.
