The history of the estate
The first mention of the estate "Dubrovitsy" dated 1627 year. In those days, she belonged to the boyar I. Morozov. After his death, the significantly increased estate passed to his daughter, Aksinya Morozova. She married Prince I. A. Golitsyn and since then Dubrovitsy has become the estate of the Golitsyn family for a hundred years.
At the end of the seventeenth century, large-scale construction began on the estate, which was developed by Boris Alekseevich Golitsyn (associate of Peter the Great). At one time, the prince was a very influential grandee at the court. But after the sudden disgraces he had to retire to the village.Since then, he lived in his estate near Moscow - Marfin, Bolshiye Vyazemyakh and Dubrovitsy.
In 1960, the prince began the construction of an unusually beautiful temple, which can be safely called an architectural masterpiece. Golitsyn estate belonged to 1781. After it was sold to Potemkin G. A. In his property she did not stay long, because the Empress Catherine bought her in 1788 for her favorite AM Dmitriev-Mamontov. Despite the fact that she soon convicted him of treason, the estate remained to belong to the Dmitriev-Mamontov family. And only in 1864, the estate again passed Golitsyn. After the revolution, the manor Dubrovitsy was first turned into a museum of noble life, which lasted until 1927. After that the agricultural technical school was located here, and then the VNII (VISH). Some of the premises of the palace of view of the museum are still occupied. In addition, the registry office and the restaurant are now located in the palace complex.
The construction of the temple
The construction of the temple in the Dubrovitsa estate was begun by B. A. Golitsyn. When laying the first stone in 1690, Peter the Great himself was present. In the future, the church estate "Dubrovitsy" became its true decoration.Construction of the temple lasted fourteen years. Art historians and historians believe that not only Russian builders but also foreigners (specialists from Switzerland and Italy) took part in the process of building the building, as evidenced by its unusual nature. In general, the temple is designed in the Baroque style.
Description of the Church of the Sign
The church in the Golitsyn estate in Dubrovitsy was named Znamenskaya. Unfortunately, the names of the architects who built such an unusual temple have not been preserved in history. For its construction were used white stones from the surrounding regions. The building of the church was made in the Baroque style and decorated with elaborate stone carvings and sculptures, which was very unusual for that time. His own bell tower in the temple was not. It was replaced by a small belfry, installed opposite the main entrance.
The church is shaped like a pillar and is surrounded by ornate stairs and open galleries. At the entrances there are statues of white stone of the saints - Gregory Chrysostom and John the Divine. Also in the corners of the facade you can see the sculptures of the apostles: Matthew, John, Luke and Mark.
Experts say that the Church of the Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos in the estate "Dubrovitsy" (the photo is given in the article) is one of the most unusual in Russia, since its construction was carried out according to an Orthodox project that was absolutely not typical for that time. Golitsyn managed to build such an unusual temple only with the support of Peter the Great, who was very interested in the fate of the building. After the church was erected, local clergymen even refused to sanctify it, as its appearance hateful to them.
The building has a lot of unusual details. From above, the crown crowns the temple, and instead of the usual frescoes inside you can see a large number of biblical sculptures. Sometimes the temple is even called the museum of sculptures.
Dubrovitsy manor in Podolsk has long been shrouded in riddles and legends caused by the Church of the Sign. Until now, historians have been actively debating about the purpose and history of the temple. By the way, for unknown reasons, the names of the architects who erected the building remained unknown. All this gave rise to the appearance of numerous legends.
Not the last role in the appearance of myths was played by the secret organization “Order of the Russian Knights”, which was founded by Matvey Dmitriev-Mamontov. Many are still amazed by the fact that at the base the building resembles the cross of the Templars. The Phoenix bird, decorating the interior of the temple, does not give rest either. But it was she who was the symbol of the revival of the Master of the Order. In addition, inside the church you can see numerous inscriptions in Latin. In general, there are quite a few unusual moments in the interior and exterior decoration that give rise to many questions and to which there is no answer.
The participation of Peter I in the fate of the temple
The main question that prevails over historians is why Peter I approved such an unusual temple, which is decorated with far from Orthodox symbols and sculptures. Moreover, the king showed great interest in construction.
Despite the favor of Peter the Great to Golitsyn, the local patriarch Adrian categorically refused to consecrate the temple. And only after his death, the church was consecrated by a new metropolitan. Historians suggest that Adrian could suspect that the temple was conceived as a Catholic, and not Orthodox. Therefore, he refused to perform the rite.
Although all these oddities and there is a logical explanation. Golitsyn was a very educated man and was known as an adherent of Western culture. He often visited the German Quarter and made friends with its inhabitants. Perhaps the unusual forms of the cathedral were inspired by the whole of the West.It is worth noting that Golitsyn spoke good Latin, in his house there were representatives of the Catholic clergy. Peter the Great himself was a supporter of everything German, so he could very loyally treat the construction of an unusual church.
Reconstruction of the estate
After the estate "Dubrovitsy" in Podolsk became the property of Alexander Dmitriev-Mamontov, the new owner decided to refit it. All changes were related to the restructuring of the interiors and facades of the main house.
If earlier the temple occupied the main positions, then from the eighteenth century it goes into the background. Baroque design goes out of fashion and new buildings are already building in the spirit of classicism. Since it was difficult to rebuild the whole house, it was decided to replace only the exterior decor. A wide Empire-style staircase was attached to the main entrance to the building. And on the side bollards on both sides sat marble lions. Open (later they were glazed) terraces were attached to the ends of the main building.
A flower garden was laid out in front of the main entrance and a fountain was installed. On the river side, the house was decorated with a terrace with ten columns. And at the end of the eighteenth century, a linden park appeared in the western part of the estate, which separated the palace zone from the office buildings, which are still available in the estate of the museum "Dubrovitsy".
The interior of the house
Changes occurred in the interior of the building. The interiors have been completely redesigned. Small rooms completely disappeared, instead of which spacious halls appeared. The most important of them had an area of about 200 square meters. m. Its walls from the bottom to the top were painted with perspective painting.
And on the columns you can see pictures of coats of arms, one of which is a symbol of the Dmitriev-Mamontov family. The painting of this room was restored in 1970. Currently in this room is a meeting room of the Academic Council of the All-Russian Scientific-Research Institute of Scientific and Technical Information.
The fate of the estate
Further changes in the estate were carried out by Matthew Dmitriev-Mamontov. After a successful career, the owner of the estate retired and began to live in it. Here he conceived the idea of creating the “Order of Russian Knights”. The count independently wrote the charter of the secret organization. In this document, he outlined the basic principles, among which was the abolition of slavery and the giving of lands and estates to the so-called Russian knights. New ideas of the count are so fascinated that he ordered to enclose the entire estate with a stone wall with medieval teeth. This gave the estate a castle view.Historians and that is not installed, who executed such an unusual order of the graph. It is possible that he himself developed a plan, because he knew the fortification well. The wall surrounded the estate for some time, but in the thirties of the last century it was demolished because it had no architectural value.
