How the legendary logos of sportswear and footwear brands were created
World-famous sportswear brands are companies from which you can learn marketing strategies, selling skills and the way they make a cult out of sportswear and their brand. Therefore, it is doubly interesting to learn how well-known logos of clothes and shoes for sports were invented, because today they themselves are recognizable in all corners of the planet.
One of the most successful companies in the production of sportswear, shoes and accessories, Nike got its name in honor of Nike, the goddess of victory. The company's founder, Phil Knight, didn’t receive high incomes at first, and while working at the University of Portland, he hired student-designer Caroline Davidson to design a presentation for his modest company. She was needed to meet with Japanese partners. After receiving the presentation, Knight asked Davidson to sketch and logo. She came up with a tick, as she was associated with the movement and with the wings of Nicky. Knight didn’t like the Nike logo, but the company’s founder decided to leave it, because the sign attracted him with something, and there was no time left.
As a result, he did not just take root, but became much more recognizable than the name of the company. Davidson received a total of $ 35 for the Nike logo, but Knight did not forget that he owed her the appearance of his logo. At the anniversary of the company, Caroline received from the hands of the founder a ring studded with diamonds in the form of the same tick, and the company's stock.
The second giant in the world of sportswear is Adidas. It is safe to say that his three bands conquered the world. Despite the fact that over time the Adidas logo has undergone significant changes, it is still recognizable.
The company was founded by Adolf (Adi) Dassler in 1900, when he and his wife began to sew and sell shoes. In the 25th year, Adi, who loved football, made the first ever spiked boots. This was a powerful impetus to the growth of the company, but the Second World War, the fall of the factory under the influence of the Americans and the need to pay a contribution split the family business.Adi gets one of his pieces and calls her Adidas by his first name and the first three letters of the last name, and his brother gets the second part and founds Puma.
Adi's company needed a serious logo that would look equally good on billboards and as a small patch on sneakers. Therefore, it simply adds another one to the two stripes of the family logo and thus makes its own legendary brand. In 1971, the company began selling clothing not only for professional athletes, but also for leisure and recreation. At the same time, the new Adidas logo appears - a trefoil with three stripes and the letters Adidas below. These lines symbolized the diversity of the company. In 1997, the company changed its logo, leaving the name and the same three stripes, but located in the form of a mountain, as a symbol of the obstacles that athletes overcome. However, this logo of the brand of clothes and shoes for sports was not accepted with delight, and the trefoil was not a thing of the past, remaining as a logo for specials. collections.
As we already know, the Puma brand is literally the brother of Adidas. However, the logos of the brothers' clothing brands and their concept are completely different. Having established his production, Rudolf Dassler chose the puma, an animal of the cat family, which symbolized speed, as the company's symbol. So on the logo appeared the image of a puma, jumping over the capital letter D.
Already in 1960, a more modern type of logo appeared, depicting a jumping cat next to the big letters PUMA. This brand of sports apparel brand is one of the few that has not changed much over the decades, perhaps only the silhouette of a cat has become more modern.
Unlike Puma, the Reebok logo has undergone significant changes over the history of its existence. Despite the fact that in the center of the logo is always the name of the brand, it is periodically reviewed and changed for the better. Today, branded clothing with the Reebok logo is a sign of good taste and attention to your image in any situation.
The company was founded in 1895 by shoemaker Joseph Foster, who was keen on running and came up with sewing new running shoes with spikes. The first logo of the company consisted of the name and the British flag. Then he was replaced by a vector drawn under the letters. Soon, only one vector remained in the logo, and in 2000 it was removed, returning only the letters Reebok in its original form. Later, designers returned and removed the vector, in 2006 the logo was reduced to three letters RBK, but a couple of years they returned the full name.
In 2014, the company introduced its new logo - next to the brand name is a delta badge, consisting of three faces. Each face symbolizes change - social, physical and psychological. This logo shows the development vector of the company, which no longer produces goods for professional athletes, but focuses on clothing and footwear for ordinary people involved in fitness.
Rare logos of clothing brands do not change over time, and New Balance is among them. Today, New Balance sneakers are the ultimate dream of millions of fashionisans around the world. The company was created at the very beginning of the 20th century in America, but it goes back to England with its roots, where the creator of the brand, William Riley, was born. Observing how stable the chicken on the legs with three points of support, he came up with a support structure for orthopedic shoes and literally called the company "New Balance". However, the production of sports shoes and the traditional logo is still very far away.
The capital letter N appeared on sneakers of the 320th series only in the 70s, and since then it has remained the same company logo. And although the designer of the company was a little worried about the similarity of the logo with the Nike brand, he decided that it would play into his hands. Buyers will want to buy "Nike", and get another brand, but better quality.
The word "conversions" has long become synonymous with sneakers and it is no coincidence, because the best, most comfortable, stylish and fashionable sneakers are always Converse.
The company started in 1908, but in 1917 the company launched the Converse All Stars line with shoes for basketball players, then they only played in sneakers. This line becomes the most successful, its full name goes into the logo, depicting a circle in the center of which a star is drawn, and around the name of the brand.
Later, the logo began to constitute the word Converse, in which an asterisk is inserted in the letter O. The modern logo appeared in 2017 and looks like the same word Converse, but written in a new font specially designed for the logo, and on top is a star and chevron.
