Cunning Ariadne. The thread from which you can find the right path
How did the steady Ariadne thread turn out in Russian? Idiom came, like many other things, from the culture of the Greeks. Recall its basis, the myth of Theseus.
What gave us Hellas
She gave us a lot of things. Including the wonderful myths about gods and heroes, which are beautifully described in the book of N. A. Kuhn. Among them is a popular plot about the struggle of the hero Theseus with the Minotaur. But where does Ariadna, thread? Ariadne in him is a significant actor.
Myths about Theseus
Theseus, the son of King Aegeus, who ruled in Athens, was one of the favorite heroes of the ancient Greeks. They laid down about his adventures and exploits seven amusing stories. Our contemporary Mary Renault has written a book, Theseus, in which she presented the reader with all the adventures of the hero in an interesting way, starting from childhood, and Theseus himself tells the story in it. We will only dwell on that part of his life, when Ariadna gave him a thread in his hands. What for? This will be clear from the following story.
Tribute to the Athenians
I must first say that Theseus was brought up far from his father's house in Athens, his grandfather and mother. When he grew up, he stopped all Attica, and his father recognized him by the sword, which he left for his child. Not long King Aegeus rejoiced at his newborn son. The mighty King Minos sent a request to pay tribute from Crete: once in 9 years a ship should be sent to the island, on which fourteen people were placed: 7 boys and 7 girls. They waited a bitter fate. They never returned home to their families and friends, as they were devoured by a terrible monster - the Minotaur, the future successor to the king of Minos. He was a man with the head of a bull, who never left the intricate underground labyrinth, located under the king’s palace, which Daedalus had built in ancient times.
Preparing for a dangerous path
Brave Theseus, against the will of his father, voluntarily and meekly boarded the ship under mourning black sails. He decided once and for all to free the Greeks from shameful tribute, having fought with the monster and destroyed it. The hero has already accomplished many feats and was confident in his wit and strength. But besides that, he sacrificed to Apollo at Delphi so that the journey across the sea would go well. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, Theseus also called for help. Her patronage greatly helped Theseus when Ariadne became his assistant, whose thread saved his life.
Theseus in Crete: the first feat
The ship sailed safely to the island of Crete. The Athenians were taken to the king. He immediately singled out from the crowd of Theseus. The daughter of the king, the beautiful Ariadne, was conquered at first sight. Aphrodite settled in her soul a love for a handsome young man. Ariadne decided for herself that she would not let him perish in a gloomy maze under the palace. Minos began to mock one of the girls. Theseus did not remain silent and interceded for her. Then Minos suffered his wrath on the courageous and intrepid youth. The king began to boast that he descended from the ruler of lightning Zeus. Theseus replied that his father was the oscillator of the seas, Poseidon. "Oh, if so, then let him help you," with these words, Minos took the precious ring from his hand and threw it into the abyss of water. Not long thought Theseus. Instantly he swallowed off a cliff and disappeared under the waves. With horror Ariadne looked at it.The god Triton was waiting for Theseus and rushed into the magical palace of the ruler of all waters.Poseidon gently received his son-hero and gave him the ring of Minos. Triton took Theseus back to the place where Theseus jumped from. All were shocked, and more than all in thought, fell Minos. Without answering a word, he turned and left.
In the maze
Ariadne secretly gave Theseus a sharp sword and a ball of thread. All the unfortunate were taken to the labyrinth. Their Theseus left near the entrance, and he tied the thread from the ball to the entrance and went along the intricate corridors, all the time unwinding the cup. The loving Ariadna knew: the thread would lead Theseus back out of the hopeless labyrinth. The fight with the Minotaur was heavy. Seeing Theseus, the Minotaur issued a terrible roar. He bent his head, which were huge horns, and rushed at the dared to disturb him and call him to fight the mortal. Furious, wild, experiencing strong anger, with a frenzy, the Minotaur made throws several times. Theseus managed to grab him by the horn and thrust a sharp sword into his heart. The Minotaur was finished. Now you have to get out of the stuffy, long, web-covered maze.
Way to freedom
The gallant Theseus, who does not know the fear, led Ariadne's clue past skeletons, piles of bones and skulls, past all the remains left by the insatiable Minotaur. The hero's path was long and hard, but his heart sang a triumphant song, and he was overwhelmed with love for Ariadne and joy for the liberation of the motherland from the tribute.
What does "Ariadne's thread" mean?
Thanks to this myth, any way out of the tangled situation began to be called "the thread of Ariadne."
